A Heavy Task on the Waterfront
Orange rubber gloves pressed against the stone walkway as an elderly park cleaner scooped up scattered yellow fries and crumpled paper wrappers.
His knees creaked under the weight of his olive-green work uniform. With one hand bracing a wooden broom handle and the other holding open a heavy black trash bag, he dragged each piece of litter toward the plastic rim.
A few feet away on a dark wooden bench, a woman in a green blouse sat with her ankles crossed. She held a red cardboard carton of fries in one hand while her thumb scrolled across the glowing screen of her smartphone.
Between bites, she chewed slowly and watched the older man bend his back. She popped another fry between her lips, her eyes flicking back down to the screen.
A Deliberate Spill on the Pavement
The worker straightened his spine and let out a soft breath against the afternoon heat. He repositioned his feet and lowered the straw bristles of his broom to sweep the remaining crumbs into a neat pile.
As he worked the broom along the stone joints, the woman leaned forward from the wooden slats. She tilted the red container upside down and tipped the remaining fries directly onto the clean stones below.
The cardboard carton tumbled onto the pavers alongside greasy paper napkins, scattering fresh food across the worker’s boots. A quiet laugh slipped from her lips as she tapped her phone screen again.
The older man froze over the broom handle. His cap tilted downward, hiding his eyes, while his shoulders slumped by an inch.
Instead of raising his voice, his fingers tightened around the worn wood. He repositioned his boots around the new spill and began sweeping the fresh pile back together, stroke by stroke.
Footsteps from the Curb
The low rumble of a motorcycle engine cut through the park pathway. A blue cruiser coasted to a stop along the curb near the water railing.
A broad-shouldered man in a denim vest swung his leg over the saddle, resting his heavy boots against the concrete curb. His eyes tracked the worker’s slow, repeated sweeping motions across the stones.
He killed the ignition, stepped off the bike, and marched across the open walkway with long, direct strides. The woman remained reclined against the bench, her fingers still flicking across her display.
The rider crossed the distance without making a sound until his heavy boots halted directly behind the sanitation worker.
An Unvarnished Response
The rider reached out a thick arm and took hold of the top edges of the black plastic trash bag. He pulled it upward, lifting the full weight of collected debris into the clear air.
Stepping around the older worker, the man hoisted the sack directly over the woman’s head. He tilted the opening downward, dumping the full load of greasy napkins, crumpled papers, and hundreds of discarded fries across her hair.
Her phone dropped into her lap as she threw both hands into the air, screaming through a cloud of paper debris. Fries caught in the curls of her hair and tumbled down the front of her green shirt.
The rider lowered his arms and smoothed the crumpled neck of the empty black bag. He turned toward the elderly worker, extended his arm, and returned the sack straight into the orange-gloved hands.
The older man took the plastic handles and looked up with a small, quiet nod. Behind them, the woman sat rigid on the bench, picking potato strips from her collar as the motorcycle idled by the riverbank.
