A Guard On The Road
The white goose threw its wings wide, planted its webbed feet on the asphalt, and ran directly toward the front bumper of the moving truck.
Its neck stretched forward, letting out sharp, rhythmic honks that echoed against the surrounding pine trees. The vehicle slowed, its tires crunching onto the soft gravel shoulder before stopping completely.
The truck door clicked open. A man stepped out into the humid air, keeping his hands visible at his sides as he rounded the frame of the vehicle.
Instead of fleeing into the brush, the goose folded its wings against its sides and turned its back to the man. It took several deliberate strides across the grassy bank, glancing over its shoulder every few paces to confirm he was following.
The Unspoken Guide
The bird led him directly toward the edge of the lake, steering away from the open water and toward a square concrete drainage box set into the turf.
When it reached the edge of the opening, the goose halted. It lowered its orange bill toward the dark void, bobbing its head repeatedly before turning its dark eyes back to the driver.
The man approached slowly, his boots sinking slightly into the damp shore grass. He leaned over the rim of the square concrete shaft, bracing one hand against his knee to block the midday glare.
At the bottom of the dry, leaf-strewn pit sat a single yellow gosling. The small bird pecked uselessly at the rough cement walls, its tiny wings twitching as it tried and failed to scramble upward.
Hands Reaching Down
The adult goose stood barely twelve inches away, shifting its weight from foot to foot as the man leaned further down.
He bent at the waist, reaching both arms deep into the concrete recess. His fingers curved under the gosling’s downy body, supporting its chest and webbed feet to keep it from slipping back down.
As he lifted the chick above ground level, the small bird let out high-pitched chirps. The adult goose did not hiss or snap; it simply leaned its long neck forward, tapping its bill softly against the young one’s back the moment it cleared the ledge.
The man lowered his hands to the grass, opening his palms flat against the green blades.
A Return To The Water
The gosling scrambled free of his hands, immediately tucking itself against the adult bird’s white flank.
The larger bird turned toward the shoreline, shortening its stride so the chick could keep pace across the grass. The man stepped back toward the roadway, watching the two shapes move down the gentle slope.
The goose waded belly-deep into the dark water, and the small yellow chick paddled right behind, kicking up tiny circular ripples that drifted out across the calm surface.
